12 Steps 2 Radiance | Blog/Behavior Change in Coaching/Change the Environment, Not the Person

Environment shapes behavior more than willpower ever will. Change the context and the behavior changes.

A client keeps reaching for the snacks at night. Or scrolling past midnight. Or skipping the walk she swore she'd take. The pull, especially for the deep thinkers among us, is to ask why. What's underneath this. What does the behavior mean.

Dr. BJ Fogg would steer you somewhere far simpler and far more powerful. Environment shapes behavior more than willpower ever will. Change the context and the behavior changes, often without touching the person's inner world at all.

And that, it turns out, is one of the cleanest scope protections you have.

When you reach for why do you do this, what is it really about, you're stepping into the internal landscape. That's deep water, and it belongs to a licensed therapist. When you reach for what's in the room when this happens, and what could we move, you stay external, concrete, and safely inside coaching. The environment is fair game. The psyche is not.

So instead of let's explore your relationship with food, you try where's the bowl, and where could it go. Instead of let's unpack why you avoid the walk, you try what would make the shoes impossible to miss in the morning. You move the cue. The behavior follows.

There's a quiet permission in this. You don't have to go inside someone to help them change. You don't have to be qualified to excavate their history. Most of the time the room does the work, and the room is something you're completely allowed to coach.

If you want the complete framework for staying in scope, the room and everything else, Knowing the Line walks you through it in five short modules. You can start it here.

This post draws on the work of behavior scientist Dr. BJ Fogg and his Fogg Behavior Model. The ideas are his. The words, and the application to scope-safe coaching, are mine. You can learn the model directly from the source at behaviormodel.org.
