12 Steps 2 Radiance | Blog/Behavior Change in Coaching/If You Can't See It, You Can't Coach It

Until you turn a goal into something specific and observable, nobody can actually do it, and nobody can tell whether it happened.

A client tells you what she wants. I want to manage my stress. I want to heal my gut. I want to feel like myself again. It sounds like a goal, and it sounds caring to take it on. Sit with it for a second, though, and you'll notice it's a fog.

Dr. BJ Fogg makes a point that's obvious once you hear it. The brain can't execute an abstract goal. Get healthy is not a behavior. Manage your stress is not a behavior. They're destinations with no road attached. Until you turn a goal into something specific and observable, nobody can actually do it, and nobody can tell whether it happened.

That's the effectiveness reason to get specific. Here's the part that protects your license, and almost nobody connects it.

Vague is where scope quietly gets dangerous. Heal your gut. Balance your hormones. Manage your anxiety. Those aren't just fuzzy. They lean toward diagnosing and treating, which isn't your job, even when your clinical training means you know exactly what they refer to. The fog is the precise place you drift out of coaching without noticing it happen.

Now watch what specificity does. Eat one vegetable at lunch four days this week. Put your phone in the other room by nine. Walk to the end of the street and back after dinner. Those are behaviors. You can see them, so you can coach them. They carry no diagnosis and no treatment. They're yours to work with, fully and safely.

So when a goal shows up as a fog, don't chase the fog. Ask what it would look like on an ordinary Tuesday. What would I see you doing? Turn the state of being into an action you could watch happen, and you move you both onto solid ground.

Getting specific can feel like you're thinking too small. You're not. Specific isn't smaller. Specific is safe, and it's the only thing that actually works, because it's the only thing a person can do.

If you want the full framework for turning fog into language you can use safely, that's what Knowing the Line teaches, in five short modules. You can start it here.

This post draws on the work of behavior scientist Dr. BJ Fogg and his Fogg Behavior Model. The ideas are his. The words, and the application to scope-safe coaching, are mine. You can learn the model directly from the source at behaviormodel.org.
