12 Steps 2 Radiance | Blog/Scope Safety/Scope Safety Is a Design Problem, Not a Discipline Problem

A behavior that keeps failing is usually a design flaw, not a character flaw. Make it easier, and it happens.

You write the post. You read it back. You change one word, then change it back, then sit there with your hands off the keyboard. The blank page wins again. You tell yourself you'll come back to it later, and later you do the same thing.

Here's what I want you to hear. That is not a discipline problem. You are not undisciplined. You are not behind. You're trying to run on willpower, a thing that was never built to feel safe, and willpower was never going to be enough.

Dr. BJ Fogg, the behavior scientist at Stanford, has spent more than twenty years studying why people do what they do. One of the first things he'll tell you is to act as though willpower doesn't exist. It's finite. It drains through the day, faster when you're stressed or scared. Build anything on it and you've built on sand. I learned that the hard way with my own content.

I knew my scope boundaries. I made my list of trigger words, the ones that imply diagnosis or treatment. I even ran my content through AI to check it. It came back clean. I published anyway, and I got flagged. When I pushed, the answer I got was close to this "should be fine".  Should be? I was not putting my license on a chatbots' best guess, and I was tired of policing every sentence in real time.

The real problem wasn't my willpower. It was that I'd been retrofitting safety onto a framework that was never designed to be safe. That isn't a system. That's anxiety with extra steps.

Dr. Fogg's bigger insight is the one that changed how I see all of this. When a behavior won't stick, the instinct is to blame the person. Try harder. Want it more. Find your motivation. But a behavior that keeps failing is usually a design flaw, not a character flaw. Make it easier, and it happens. You don't need more grit. You need a better-built path.

Now watch what that does for your scope of practice, because this is the part nobody connects.

When your client stalls, when they miss the thing they swore they'd do, the pull is to go digging. Why do you keep self-sabotaging? What's really going on underneath? And the moment you follow that thread into their past and their wounds, you've wandered off the map. That's not coaching anymore. That's the work a licensed therapist is trained and insured to do, and you are not there to do it.

So here's the relief. The scope-safe response and the good-coaching response are the exact same response. You don't dig. You treat the stall as a design flaw. You make the next step smaller. You look at what got in the way and you reduce the friction. You stay forward-looking, which is where coaching lives, and you stay squarely in your lane, which is where your license stays safe. Same move. Two protections.

And it's true for your own words too. When you freeze over a sentence, the fix isn't more discipline. It's a framework where the safe words are the only words the structure produces. You stop auditing yourself one phrase at a time, because the safety is already built in. You're not checking it after. It's in there from the start.

That's the whole shift. Stop white-knuckling your scope. Start designing for it. You are not starting from zero. You already know more than enough. What you've been missing isn't willpower. It's a structure that holds you up instead of one you have to hold up by force.

There's a verse I keep coming back to. Isaiah 58:11. He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. That's the picture I want for you in your work. Not straining to keep the whole thing standing on your own strength. Supported. Steady. Drawing from something built in that doesn't run dry.

If you're ready to stop white-knuckling your scope and build it in instead, that's the whole point of Knowing the Line. Five short modules that hand you the framework, so the safe words become the only words your structure produces. You can start it here.

This post draws on the work of behavior scientist Dr. BJ Fogg and his Fogg Behavior Model. The ideas are his. The words, and the application to scope-safe coaching, are mine. You can learn the model directly from the source at behaviormodel.org.
